It is told by two different persons: Payton and Kim. Payton is driving his car and Kim is “running” away from her parents. At the end Kim gets in Payton’s car

Because he feels he needs to talk to someone about it. And he feels guilty in a short period of time.

5)    What happens at the end? (give arguments for your claims)

Kim gets in Payton’s car and we have a feeling he rapes or/and kill her, because the sound of drums are back and we know that he has killed before.

Kim: 15, in a rebellious period of her life, she’s a runaway. She thinks that she can take care of herself an does not need her parents, but she admits top her self that she wants to be home.

The drums are often loud and rapid, the instrument that holds the tempo, it could be a symbol of his heartbeat,

8)    And of the tattoo?

The cobra tattoo, a snake, can’t be trusted, the tattooartist was stoned at the time he made it, so it got infected

9)    What are the themes of the text?

GROWING UP, death, drunk driving, rape, guilt, psychopath, violence

1) Write a short summary of the short story Rendezvous.
The story is divided by two narrators ( Kim and Payton). In Paytons parts you
learn that he has done something worthy of going to a priest for and something
that would cause a priest to tell him to tell the police. You also learn that he
doesn't have the judgment.
A) he let some stoned guy give him a tattoo
B) he is drinking while driving
In Kim’s parts of the story you find that she is a young girl who has run away
from home and is hitchhiking. She wants her parent s to be afraid for her, but
she doesn't realize just how much trouble
2) What genre is the text?

3) How does the author build suspense?
The use go music, speed of the car, the rain, the drums vs saxophone, the bit about
3/5 times visiting the funeral homes, the priest telling him to go to the police.

4) Why has Payton been visiting a priest and going to funerals? (lines 10-26, p. 52)
You can assume it is because he is looking for some sympathy for his crimes. Murder,
presumably of young girls he picks up on the side of the road as hitchhikers.
5) What happens at the end? (give arguments for your claims)
In the end Kim gets in the car, even though she wasn't able to see what the driver looks like. Payton
will drive away with her and when she leaves the car it will be as a corpse being ditched on the side
of the interstate. He has killed 5 others, the drums come up when he sees her and he almost put her
in a case file of sorts. He labels it Hitchhiker, Young Girl.

Payton is a alcoholic ( at least two beers consumed in the story as he drives) , has poor judgment
( tattoo form a stoned guy, drinking while driving), Dangerous ( all other reasons, plus the fact that

They could symbolize his heart beat, drive for “blood”, the retreat of his rational
side.
8) What is the symbolism behind the Saxophone?
The saxophone appears when Payton thinks about his crimes and the past, but
disappears when he sees Kim. For this reason I think the saxophone symbolizes his consciousness
9) And of the tattoo?
Past choices and how they effect I'm even now.
9) What are the themes of the text?
poor life choices, hitchhiking, what running away can lead to, drinking, murder.

The story is about a girl and a man. The girl has ran away to punish her parents, and she is excited to tell her friends about it. The man is driving on the Interstate while drinking. He is listening to loud music and his mood changes several times, and he is rubbing his cobra-tattoo. Later they meet, and he picks her up.

2)      What genre is the text?
Crime-short story.

3)      How does the author build suspense?
Through the drums/saxophone in the mans’ car. Through all the adjectives, repeatings, short sentences, the cars speed, the unfinished sentences.

Because he killed people. He’s a psychopath.

He kills the girl. His cobra is symbolizing his inner killer. Something went wrong with the tattoo(infection) and perhaps something went wrong with him because the cobra is a symbol of his evilness.

A man named Payton has done something bad (implied murder or possibly hit-and-run) and is drinking while driving down the interstate. Meanwhile a girl has run away from her family and is hitchhiking on that interstate. They cross paths.

2)      What genre is the text?

Music, rubbing the cobra tattoo, not saying thins but only implying,

4)      Why has Payton been visiting a priest and going to funerals? (lines 10-26, p. 52)

Payton did something very bad and he feels remorse, so he went to a priest to confess, but the priest wasn't as understanding and forgiving as he had hoped.

5)      What happens at the end? (give arguments for your claims)

The girl gets into the car, and Payton kills her. Obviously, the Interstate is sort of an obsession for him, the manifestation of his insanity, and the drums beating are leading up to something dramatic. Possibly the beating of his heart, because he gets a thrill out of it.

"The priest wasn't even sympathetic about him sending flowers and visiting the funeral home, which he'd done three out of five times after he'd gone on the Interstate."

6)      Make a thorough character sketch of Payton and Kim.

Kim:

·         Fifteen y/o girl.

·         Sadistic, in the sense that she wants to punish her parents.

·         Proud. Wants to brag to her friends about enduring what she is, even though it was self-inflicted

Payton:

·         Has a cobra tattoo.

·         Problems with alcohol.

·         Religious.

·         Not much regard for authorities (unless religious, but still ignores those.)

·         Self-righteous (he feels that it's okay because he sends flowers and shows momentary remorse).

7)      What could be the symbolic meaning of the drums?

First and foremost, the drums create suspense, as they would do in a movie/TV-show. Other than that, they tell us how Payton gets a thrill (increased heart rate?) out of doing these things.

8)      What is the symbolic meaning of the saxophone?

The drums is a symbol of his pleasure, and the sax represents the opposite - his remorse. It is his conscience telling him he should follow the priest's advice, and that he should stop 'going on the interstate', which obviously only means trouble for him.

9)      And of the tattoo?

The tattoo is his insane side, possibly a voice in his head telling him he needs to do this. Making him want to do this.

10)  What are the themes of the text?

Run away kids, purity vs. impurity, religion in the face of horrible sin.
